Slow Start Turns into Big Momentum
Ord received the opening kickoff but was quickly forced into a 4-and-out. From there, Central City began to control field position, often starting drives in favorable territory. Central City struck first with the opening touchdown, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Once they started clicking, there was no looking back. Offensive and Defensive Stars Senior wide receiver and playmaker #3 Jacob Brazee had a standout performance, hauling in 8 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown. Brazee also made an impact on defense with an interception and chipped in 38 rushing yards. Quarterback Parker Zikmund was steady and efficient, completing 15 of 23 passes for 200 total yards, keeping the Bison offense balanced and effective throughout the night. Coach Huebert’s Thoughts Following the game, Central City head coach Troy Huebert praised his team for overcoming early mistakes and settling into their game plan. He emphasized the importance of controlling field position and commended his players for executing when it mattered most. Looking Ahead With the win, Central City starts the season 1-0 and will travel to face Cozad next week. Ord, despite the loss, remains a dangerous contender in Class C2 and will look to bounce back when they host a talented Kearney Catholic squad. The Bison’s season opener showed they have the firepower and discipline to be a serious factor in Class C1 this year. If performances like Brazee’s and Zikmund’s continue, Central City could be in for a special season. @Tony Chapman
Nebraska High School Football – Week 1 Recap Week 1 of the Nebraska High School Football season delivered everything fans could hope for — upsets, nail-biters, statement wins, and even a game for the history books. Let’s break it down by class. — Class B Top-ranked Elkhorn North looked every bit the part in their opener, taking care of business with a decisive win. Gretna East survived a close one to keep their perfect start alive. In a battle of power programs, Waverly came out on top of Bennington in what could be called a “conversion game,” winning 21-19. The star of the night was Nathan Axmann, who racked up 268 yards and 2 touchdowns for the Vikings. If he’s not already on your radar, he should be now. Scottsbluff quarterback Nate Kelley looked sharp in their big win, while Jud Hall was airing it out with precision. And then there was the shocker — Norris 49, Omaha Skutt 3. Yes, 49-3. Buckle up for this season. — Class C-1 The Wahoo Warriors remain the team to beat until someone proves otherwise. Ashland-Greenwood, Sidney, Columbus Lakeview, and Central City all looked like they have the firepower and depth to make deep playoff runs. November could bring us some incredible semifinal matchups. — Class C-2 There would be no 40th consecutive win for Norfolk Catholic. Instead, Bishop Neumann earned some sweet revenge in a 21-14 victory — a rematch of last year’s state final. Meanwhile, Cross County made a statement with a 35-14 win over No. 8 Battle Creek, showing they could be a factor this season. — Eight-Man Many had circled Crofton (Class D-1) and Wynot (Class D-2) as two of the best small-town teams in Nebraska, and they delivered in a way nobody expected. Their showdown ended in a 78-76, four-overtime thriller that appears to be the highest-scoring overtime game in state history based on NSAA records. The Bloomfield Bees also stole headlines. In a dominant 30-0 shutout of two-time state finalist Stanton, Bloomfield scored two touchdowns in just 33 seconds and forced three second-half turnovers. Brock Jeannoutot was the workhorse, rushing for 120 yards and 2 touchdowns on 20 carries, plus recovering a key fourth-quarter fumble that allowed the Bees to run out the final 6½ minutes. — Six-Man The title contenders — Stuart, SEM, and Garden County — all rolled to comfortable wins. The one surprise? Wallace topped Arthur County 44-36. Whether it was an upset or just a sign of things to come remains to be seen. — Final Thoughts Week 1 gave us statement wins, wild comebacks, and unforgettable performances. If this is the tone-setter for the season, Nebraska high school football fans are in for something special in 2025. — 📸 Photo Credits: Nick Benes on X 🎥 Video Credits: Team Hudl pages
