Friday Night Lights in Wolbach: Central Valley Rolls Past Burwell

Presented by Champion Seed — Every field needs its Champion.

In small towns — there are stories you learn on a Friday night that go far beyond the game of football. When I pulled into Wolbach, Nebraska this past Friday, I was reminded of that. Sure, the scoreboard matters. But it’s the stories, the people, and the spirit that really stand out. Friday nights here are about community, family, and friends. And in Nebraska, we just do things a little differently.

Community First

Before the game, I caught up with Shane from Champion Seed — a guy who believed early in what we’re building with NebraskaTok. We talked youth sports, getting kids involved, and the little things that grow numbers on the field and momentum in the stands.

Two men standing on a football field with a scoreboard in the background displaying the game score. Both are wearing Champion Seed apparel, smiling for the camera.

Those little things matter:

  • A parent or grandparent working the concession stand.
  • Families pulling cars up near the field, honking at big plays.
  • The cheer squad, band, and halftime performers putting their hearts into the show.
  • Young kids tossing a football in the far end zone, dreaming about being the next Cougar under the lights.

Yes, live streams are a blessing, but nothing compares to being there in person. The sights, the sounds, the sense of belonging — that’s Friday Night Lights in Nebraska.

The Game: Central Valley vs. Burwell

Two proud 8-Man programs squared off: Burwell Longhorns (3–1) vs. the Central Valley Cougars (4–0).

Burwell opened with confidence, driving the field — until a game-changing moment flipped the script. Talan Wood’s interception set the tone and led to Central Valley’s first touchdown. From there, the Cougars never looked back.

Central Valley Standouts

  • Luke Shoemaker (Jr.) was everywhere:
    • 13 carries, 103 yards, 2 rushing TDs (including a 52-yard sprint)
    • 1 reception, 6 yards,
    • 9 total tackles
  • Landon Shoemaker (Jr.) was everywhere as well. I gave his twin brother the credit in the video, but Landon racked up some yards, a TD, and Tackles.
    • 1 carry, 45 yards, 1 rushing TD
    • 5 catches for 62 yards and 17 tackles
  • QB L. Nekoliczak (So.) stayed efficient:
    • 11-of-14 passing, 110 yards, 2 Passing TDs
  • Team Totals: 295 rushing yards, 5 rushing TDs, 2 passing TDs, complete control on both sides of the ball.

Verdict: The Cougars made a statement — and proved they’re a team to watch in Class D2. Burwell will regroup; there’s plenty of season left.
